  • If you've filed a claim for unemployment insurance or disaster unemployement assistance and want to check the status of your claim or notify the Labor Department that your address has changed, call (866)783-5567.

  • Businesses looking to hire people dislocated by Hurricane Katrina can call the Louisiana Department of Labor toll-free at (800)481-6762 from 8 AM to 5 PM. Employers should provide company contact information and specifics about the type of employment being offered. Businesses can also visit the Labor Department's Web site at www.laworks.net
  • Employers affected by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita need to contact the unemployment insurance division at the Louisiana Department of Labor if they have changed their addresses or closed their businesses. Employers who cannot complie their quarterly reports based on actual records are asked to file a report based on a reasonable estimation of wages. For help, employers should call (800)408-9762.
  • The U.S. Small Business Administration is running a Gulf Coast Business Matchmaking service designed to ensure that small businesses get a share of the hurricane recovery contracts. To register for this service visit www.ccr.gov.
  • Jefferson Parish has opened two business recovery centers staffed by representatives from the Small Business Administration, Small Business Developement Centers, certified public accountants, the State Insurance Commission, and more. the center locations are:

  • The Jefferson Parish Department of Citizens' Service is collecting the names of seniors and disabled citizens who need help cleaning debris from their homes. For more information, call the agency at (504)736-6000, weekdays from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

Jefferson Parish Information
Garbage Information

  • Jefferson Parish officials say that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has contracted an environmental company to collect storm debris including trees, sheetrock, carpet, furniture and even appliances.

    The Corps estimates that about 35 percent of the estimated 5 million cubic yards have been collected to date. In addition, Waste Management has resumed its twice-weekly pickup of regular household trash.

    Residents with complaints about storm debris pickup are urged to call CERES Environmental at 1-888-376-2220 or 1-985-359-3017.

    West bank residents who wish to drop off their own storm debris can continue to do so at 5990 Lapalco Blvd. at Ames in Marrero. However, appliances will no longer be accepted after Sunday.

    Refrigerators with no food in them can be taken to Southern Scrap located at 50 Labauve Road (Highway 18) in Westwego. Hours are from 8a-5p Monday through Friday. Refrigerators containing food can be brought to the Jefferson Parish sanitary landfill at 5800 Hwy. 90 West, Waggaman. Hours of operation are from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily, until further notice.

  • Jefferson Parish has re-opened its two permanent trash drop-off sites and one temporary site for those residents wanting to dispose of garbage and storm debris between scheduled curbside collections.

    These sites will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. until further notice. 400 David Drive in Metairie (between Airline Drive and West Metairie Avenue)

    Wastes accepted: garbage, tree debris, C & D (carpet, metal roofing, etc.) white goods (appliances) and household hazardous wastes.

    6250 Lapalco Boulevard in Marrero (west of Ames Boulevard) Wastes accepted: garbage, tree debris, C & D (carpet, metal, roofing, etc.) and household hazardous wastes. White goods not accepted at this location.

    5990 Lapalco Boulevard in Marrero (former K-Mart location) Wastes accepted: white goods (appliances) only.

Post Katrina Diaster Electrical Repairs
Replace or Recondition?
Some items may be reconditioned, while others will need to be completely replaced to protect your family. It is recommended that you allow an electician or elctrical inspector to guide the restoration or replacement of any electrical wiring or equipment.

Corrosion and insulation damage can occur when water and silt get inside electical devices and products. Water can also damage the motors in electrical appliances.
Therefore, you should be prepared to replace:
1. Circuit Breakers
2. All electrical wiring systems
3. Light switches, thermostats, outlets, light fixtures, electric heaters, ceiling fans.
4. Furnace burner and blowers motors, ignition transformers, elements, relays (for furnaces and hot water tanks)
5. Hot water tanks
6. Washing machines, dryers, furnaces, heat pumps, freezers, refrigerators, dehumidifiers, vacuums, power tools, exercise equipment and similar appliances
7. Electronic equipment, including computers and home entertainment systems.
*Underwriters laboratories Inc. publishes guidelines that address flood damaged electrical equpement and wiring.
